How to Wash Your Car Properly: A Beginner’s Guide

Washing your car doesn’t need to be complicated.

If you’re new to car care, it can sometimes feel like everyone online expects you to already know what snow foam does, which order products go in and why you apparently need seventeen different cloths just to clean one car.

You don’t.

A good car wash is mainly about using the right products in the right order and taking your time.

Here’s the Angelicar beginner-friendly way to do it.

What You’ll Need

For a basic exterior wash, we recommend having:

  • Angelicar Citrus Pre-Wash
  • Angelicar Snow Foam ULTRA
  • Angelicar Wash ‘n’ Wax
  • Angelicar Wash Mitt
  • Angelicar Small Microfibres
  • Angelicar Glass Glow
  • Angelicar Angel Glaze
  • A bucket
  • Clean water
  • A hose or pressure washer
  • A suitable drying towel
  • Your chosen wheel cleaning products and tools

You don’t need everything in the detailing aisle to start looking after your car.

Build a simple kit, learn what each product does and add to it as your confidence grows.

Step 1: Choose Where You’re Going to Wash

Where possible, avoid washing your car when the bodywork is extremely hot or sitting in strong direct sunlight.

Products and water can dry onto hot panels much faster, making the car more difficult to work with and potentially leaving residue or water marks behind.

A cooler part of the day or a shaded area will usually make the whole process easier.

Step 2: Clean Your Wheels

We like to tackle the wheels before washing the body of the car because they’re normally one of the dirtiest areas.

Start by rinsing away loose dirt.

Use dedicated wheel brushes, cloths or cleaning tools rather than the same Angelicar Wash Mitt you’ll be using on your paintwork.

That separation matters.

Your wheels can collect brake dust, grit and heavy road dirt. You don’t want to pick that up and then rub it across your paint.

Once the wheels are clean, rinse them thoroughly.

Step 3: Rinse the Car

Before physically touching your paintwork, rinse the entire car.

Start from the top and work your way down, paying particular attention to dirtier areas such as:

  • Lower doors
  • Sills
  • Wheel arches
  • Front bumper
  • Rear bumper
  • Around trim and badges

The idea is simple: remove as much loose dirt as possible before your wash mitt touches the car.

The less loose dirt sitting on the surface, the less you’re moving around during the contact wash.

Step 4: Use Citrus Pre-Wash

Next, bring in Angelicar Citrus Pre-Wash.

A pre-wash is used before you physically wash the vehicle and helps tackle dirt and grime sitting on the exterior.

How to Use Angelicar Citrus Pre-Wash

Citrus Pre-wash should be diluted with warm water for the best results. We recommend a 2:3 ratio.

Never allow a cleaning product to dry onto the vehicle.

Once the Citrus Pre-Wash has done its job, rinse the car thoroughly.

Step 5: Snow Foam

Next up: Angelicar Snow Foam ULTRA.

Snow foam is another pre-contact stage designed to help you clean the vehicle before going in with your wash mitt.

And yes, covering your car in foam is also one of the more satisfying parts.

How to Use Angelicar Snow Foam ULTRA

For best results, adjust the dilution depending on the colour of the vehicle:

  • Light-coloured vehicles: dilute at approximately 1:5
  • Dark-coloured vehicles: use approximately 2–3 parts product to 5 parts water

Apply using a snow foam lance for the most even coverage, working from the top of the vehicle downwards.

Allow the foam time to dwell and begin dragging dirt and contamination down the surface, but do not allow the product to dry onto the paintwork.

Once the foam has had time to work, rinse the vehicle thoroughly from top to bottom.

At this stage, a good amount of loose dirt and contamination should have been removed without the need to scrub the paint.

Step 6: Prepare Your Wash ‘n’ Wax

Now we move onto the contact wash using Angelicar Wash ‘n’ Wax.

Fill your bucket with clean water and add the correct amount of Wash ‘n’ Wax.

Angelicar Wash ‘n’ Wax Dilution

There’s no need to overthink this one. Add a small squirt of Wash ‘n’ Wax to a bucket of warm water, then add a little more if needed until you’re happy with the amount of suds and cleaning solution.

You don’t need to pour half the bottle into the bucket.

More product doesn’t automatically mean more cleaning power, so start with a small amount and build up if needed. Use the product as intended rather than assuming more will give a better result.

Step 7: Grab Your Angelicar Wash Mitt

Your Angelicar Wash Mitt is what you’ll use to gently clean the exterior.

Start at the top of the vehicle, where the car is generally cleaner, before moving towards the dirtier lower sections.

A simple order to follow is:

  1. Roof
  2. Windows
  3. Bonnet
  4. Boot
  5. Upper doors and panels
  6. Lower doors
  7. Front and rear bumpers
  8. Sills and heavily contaminated lower areas

Work a section at a time.

You don’t need to aggressively scrub the paint. Let your Wash ‘n’ Wax and wash mitt do the work.

If there’s a stubborn mark, don’t automatically attack it with more pressure. It may need a more suitable product or a different cleaning method.

Step 8: Keep Your Wash Mitt Clean

One of the easiest mistakes to make is cleaning an entire car while your wash mitt gets progressively dirtier.

Rinse it regularly.

If you’re using a two-bucket method, have:

  • One bucket containing your Angelicar Wash ‘n’ Wax solution
  • One bucket containing clean rinse water

Rinse the mitt in the clean-water bucket before putting it back into your shampoo solution.

The aim is to get dirt off your car, not pick it up from one panel and carry it around the rest.

Step 9: Get Into the Smaller Areas

Once you’ve cleaned the main panels, take a look at the details.

Check areas including:

  • Door handles
  • Around badges
  • Wing mirrors
  • Grilles
  • Number plates
  • Window edges
  • Around trim
  • Fuel filler area

The Angelicar Detailing Sponge can be useful for precision cleaning tasks where appropriate.

Using the Angelicar Detailing Sponge

Use the Angelicar Detailing Sponge for general cleaning and detailing tasks where a soft, controlled application is needed.

It’s ideal for working product into areas that need a little more attention, helping you clean with more precision than using a larger wash mitt or cloth.

Always make sure the sponge is clean before use, and check that it’s suitable for the surface you’re working on before applying pressure.

If you’re unsure, test it on a small, inconspicuous area first.

Step 10: Give Everything a Final Rinse

Once the contact wash is finished, rinse the entire vehicle thoroughly.

Again, work from the top down.

Check around badges, trim, grilles and panel gaps where shampoo can sometimes remain trapped.

Before moving on, have a quick walk around the car.

Missed a bit?

Do it now rather than discovering it once everything is dry.

Step 11: Dry Your Car

Try not to simply wash your car and leave it soaking wet.

As water evaporates, minerals can remain behind and create visible water spots.

Use a clean, soft drying towel and work from the top down.

You don’t need to aggressively rub the surface. Let the towel absorb the water.

And one important rule:

If your drying towel or wash mitt hits the floor, don’t put it straight back onto your paint.

You have no idea what little pieces of grit it might have picked up.

Step 12: Get the Glass Glowing

With the main wash complete, use Angelicar Glass Glow to finish your exterior glass.

How to Use Angelicar Glass Glow

Simply spray Glass Glow directly onto the glass and wipe clean with a fresh microfibre cloth.

Use a clean Angelicar Small Microfibre where suitable and work around each window methodically.

Check the glass from different angles once finished, as streaks can be easy to miss until the light catches them.

Glass Glow can also be used on the inside of your windows as part of a full interior clean.

Step 13: Finish With Angel Glaze

If you want to take the finish a little further, this is where Angelicar Angel Glaze comes in.

How to Use Angel Glaze

Angel Glaze is a simple spray-and-rinse finishing product designed to add the final touch after washing your car.

Once the vehicle has been cleaned and rinsed, spray Angel Glaze evenly over the exterior surface, then rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Use it across suitable exterior surfaces as part of the final stage of your wash routine.

Avoid allowing the product to dry onto the vehicle before rinsing.

This gives you the opportunity to finish the exterior rather than stopping immediately after the wash.

Don’t Forget Your Interior

If you’re doing a full car-care day rather than just an exterior wash, the Angelicar range also includes:

  • Interior Shampoo
  • Pink Sheen
  • Glass Glow
  • Small Microfibres
  • Car Perfume

We’ll cover the complete process in our separate How to Clean the Inside of Your Car: A Beginner’s Guide.

The Simple Version

If all of that feels like a lot to remember, your exterior routine basically looks like this:

Wheels → Rinse → Citrus Pre-Wash → Rinse → Snow Foam ULTRA → Rinse → Wash ‘n’ Wax + Wash Mitt → Rinse → Dry → Glass Glow → Angel Glaze

That’s it.

You’ll learn more techniques as you go, but you don’t need to know everything about detailing before you’re allowed to start caring for your car.
